We will begin this workshop by going out and gathering sticks and pieces of nature to use in our first project, one that will fill you with delight!

Then we will come in and you will begin to assemble your own artist book or journal using a simple binding technique. While this special book dries we will make abstract marks on a large sheet of paper to later tear or cut into book pages.

I will guide you in my process of glazing fabric to use in our books. In this book you will make abstract marks and simple botanical sketches. You will use different tools and discover new techniques and learn about the processes that I use to create my works. We will take field trips out to the countryside and be immersed in the natural environment. We will walk and observe and record what we see in our writing and our photographs.

I have a popular online workshop titled A Book of Trees, and that is what has inspired me to create this in-person workshop in the Irish landscape with a backdrop of the Wild Atlantic.

I cannot wait to return to Mulrany Arts. I was here a few years and fell completely in love. Come and be enchanted with me!

"Trees are such important things in my life… So it is no surprise that they are such a big part of my life. When we bought our house many years ago we began planting trees and making gardens. Now out of every window you can see beautiful trees! They also are a big part of my art and art journals. This workshop is a celebration of trees!”

In this workshop, you will develop these skills:

  • Create a new kind of artist book or journal

  • Discover new ways of attaching pages

  • Making abstract marks

  • Drawing loose botanical sketches and trees

  • Develop your own process for your art making

  • Develop confidence and the feeling of wonder

  • Use glazing and painting techniques to stain fabric and paper scraps

  • Use gesso in new ways

  • Work with fabric as a substrate

  • Create interesting textures

  • Stitch and wire and embellish pages
