The Embellished Surface:
A Mixed Media Painting Retreat
Open to painters working in any medium — encaustic demos provided.
Open to painters working in any medium — encaustic demos provided.
This immersive workshop (open to painters working in any medium — encaustic demos provided) in Ireland explores layering, texture, embellishment, and surface development for artists working in any painting medium. While the instructor will demonstrate a variety of encaustic techniques, the concepts are designed to translate beautifully to acrylic, oil (cold or solvent-free), watercolor, gouache, or mixed media. You’ll learn how to build meaningful layers, create depth and richness, incorporate embellishment, and develop a personal visual language — whether or not you choose to use wax.
Rather than focusing on one medium, this workshop centers on:
experimentation
composition
surface complexity
color
intuitive decision-making
editing
meaning
Painters using non-encaustic materials will receive direct guidance on how to apply each idea to their own process. The emphasis is on expanding your practice, not on mastering one specific technique.
All are welcome — encaustic painters, mixed media artists, abstract painters, and anyone looking to enrich the layers in their work.
Working with encaustic—pigmented beeswax and damar resin—we’ll explore how layering, mark-making, and embellishment can create surfaces rich in translucency, texture, and meaning.
Creating a smooth or textured surface
Carving, laying line, and intaglio
Direct and indirect image transfers
Collage and embedding materials
Controlled fusing, stenciling, and glazing
Exploring translucency and opacity in color
We’ll experiment with a range of materials that lend themselves to encaustic mark-making, including pastels, graphite, inks, RF Pigment Sticks®, water media, Posca pens, foils, transfer paper, and more.
Prerequisite: Participants should have taken at least one encaustic workshop previously.
Open to: Artists looking to deepen their encaustic practice and expand their mixed media toolkit through thoughtful experimentation and reflection.
Through structured exercises, group dialogue, and individual guidance, we’ll consider not only how to use these techniques, but why: What does encaustic allow you to say that no other medium can? How does it illuminate your voice?
In addition to technical skills, we’ll explore the expressive potential of this tactile, sensuous medium—how it can deepen your visual language and bring new meaning to your practice.
Based in New Jersey, she works across encaustic, oil, cold wax, and mixed media, layering and manipulating surfaces through scraping, burning, stitching, and mark-making. These tactile processes reflect an ongoing engagement with themes of impermanence, grief, and the passage of time. Pressman's compositions often feature luminous color relationships, gestural energy, and excavated textures that evoke both ancient manuscripts and contemporary artifacts.
Her work invites close observation, revealing traces of language, symbolic marks, and richly worked surfaces that suggest both presence and absence. Since the loss of her son in 2019, her material choices and rituals—burning, sewing, layering—have become deeply connected to mourning and memory. Each painting becomes a meditation on what remains, where discovery unfolds through process and perception.
Pressman earned her MFA in Painting from Bard College and a BA in Fine Arts (Ceramics and Sculpture) from Douglass College, Rutgers University. She has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions across the U.S., including at Susan Eley Fine Art (New York and Hudson, NY), Addington Gallery (Chicago), The Painting Center (NYC), Causey Contemporary, and R&F Handmade Paints. Notable solo shows include Messages (2023), Downtown Debut (2022), and Passing Through (2015). Her work has also been exhibited internationally and appears in numerous corporate and private collections, including Hyatt Regency, McKinsey Financial, Omni Hotels, and Sun Chemical Corporation.
I read somewhere that “The way to do, is to be” and I think it sums up my “Essence of Mulranny” experience. At the retreat I could truly just “be” in the creative space, in an environment that is exceptionally inspiring, nourishing and fun! As a result I was super productive and creative!
“Mulranny Arts is such a beautiful dichotomy: a contemporary art aesthetic caught in a time that is both historic and magical. My time at the art retreat was so nurturing, educational, and fun. What a beautiful place to find such beautiful people. I can’t wait to come back.”
“Everything about the retreat was so incredible. Everyone's kindness who worked for EOM, the accommodations and lovely lunches were all so terrific!! I also loved the beautiful Irish scenery and Colum was the most amazing tour guide. I loved his sense of humor and lightheartedness.”
