We’re thrilled to announce “Becoming”, a brand new immersive art retreat led by internationally acclaimed artist and instructor Jean Pederson, taking place August 18–25, 2026 at Essence of Mulranny Studios on Ireland’s stunning west coast.
This enriching retreat is designed to guide artists of all levels toward discovering and strengthening their personal visual language. Through the vibrant, expressive mediums of acrylic and collage, Jean will help you explore the unfolding process of becoming the artist you’re meant to be.
Rooted in classroom discussions, guided demonstrations, and plenty of dedicated studio time, the week will gently push you to ask deeper questions about your work, trust your intuition, and evolve your creative voice in a meaningful way. Whether you’re seeking clarity, reinvention, or simply a renewed connection to your practice, Becoming offers the space to explore it all.
Jean brings decades of experience as an award-winning mixed media artist, educator, and author.
Her teaching style is grounded, insightful, and encouraging—helping you navigate both the technical and emotional layers of your creative journey. Jean has an incredible ability to meet artists where they are and gently lead them toward breakthrough moments in their work.
“Becoming” is about embracing where you are, while opening to what you’re becoming—both on the canvas and within yourself.

Jean is the author of Expressive Portraits: Creative Methods for Painting People and Mixed Media Painting Workshop. She has served as a contributing editor for The Artist’s Magazine, appeared in several of the Splash best-of-watercolor series, Watercolor Artist, Magazin’Art and has many instructional dvd’s.
Included in Canada’s Who’s Who Jean is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS), Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA), National Watercolor Society (NWS) California Watercolor Association (MCWA), The Federation of Canadian Artists (SFCA), the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor (CSPWC) and the Alberta Society of Artists (ASA).
Jean has been honored with numerous national and international awards over the years, and has work placed in the Royal Collection in Windsor, England. She was the first recipient of the Federation of Canadian Artists Early Achievement Award, recognizing her many honors and awards for consistently exceptional painting, and for her international writing to promote art education.
Jean was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for contribution to the arts. Recently Jean was awarded Best in Show with the ISEA 2022 international exhibition. Jean Pederson has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally in museums and galleries in Jiangsu China, London, England, Stockholm, Sweden, New York, United Nations, San Francisco, Mexico and across Canada.
A popular instructor throughout North America, she has led workshops at colleges, professional organzations, symposiums and has juried national and international exhibitions.

Your Time with Jean at EOM
Your 8 days will be a beautiful blend of studio time, delightful excursions, cultural experiences and of course, plenty of free time to rest and explore!
You can arrive, unpack your suitcase (and your art supplies) and truly relax, at the gorgeous Essence of Mulranny Retreat center, operated by yours truly. We will be visiting enchanting villages, strolling along the beautiful coastline, touring ancient castles and ruins, picnicking in the heather fields and creating all along the way! The creative inspiration will be all around you!

There may be a few changes here and there, depending on weather usually but we will let you know.

We will collect you all at Westport Train station at 4pm and whisk you away to Mulranny, about 30 mins drive. After a champagne reception, we will gather for dinner and sharing and get you settled in to your rooms at EOM or DeBrun house.

The MAC studio will be open from 9am to 8pm and is a short walk from the residence areas Class will be from 9:30am to 4pm.
We will serve lunch at 1pm each studio day at the MAC.

This day is an all day trip to Achill Island. Lunch will be at a lovely little restaurant (your expense)
Dinner will be served back at EOM.

We often have a special entertainment on this evening but it depends on availability. We will let you know.

1⁄2 Studio day and a trip to local attractions including Westport and the Old Irish Goat center. Dinner will be at the Famous Nevins restaurant (your expense).

The bus will take you to Westport train station for a 9:45 departure to Dublin or the Galway bus.
Your home for the week.
This beautiful learning center is complete with well equipped mixed media/encaustic art studio, private bedrooms, a cozy gathering room with fireplace and group kitchen for those midnight snacks!
All meals will be included and prepared by an on-site private chef and will focus on delicious, healthy cuisine. For larger groups we house students in the village, in apartments with spectacular views.
