In this workshop, we’ll explore the beauty that comes from cracks, fractures, and erosion. By letting go of what no longer wants to stay, we open up space for the new and unexpected to emerge.
Together, we’ll dive into two ancient painting techniques—encaustic and fresco—and see how they can speak to each other in surprising ways. Using layers of pit lime, marble dust, plaster, and encaustic wax, we’ll invite cracks, textures, and decay into our work, then rediscover them with glazes of inks, stains, and colours that bring hidden details to light.
What makes this workshop even more special is its setting: the wonderfully inspiring Mulranny, on the west coast of Ireland. Here, the shifting light, vast skies, and rugged landscape will become part of our process. We’ll also integrate local materials—such as sands, pigments, and natural textures from the surrounding environment—so that each piece carries a trace of place, infused with the spirit of this unique landscape.
You’ll get to play with natural and found materials, layering surfaces that shift between smooth and rough, fragile and strong. Rather than following strict steps, we’ll embrace an intuitive, playful process where accidents become inspiration.
What you can look forward to:
Building your paintings from the ground up with lime and marble dust.
Watching cracks and fractures emerge and learning to integrate them beautifully.
Layering colour with inks, stains, and encaustic glazes for luminous effects.
Combining textures, local materials, and natural elements to create expressive, one-of-a-kind pieces.
Finding your own rhythm and voice through guided exploration.
I’ll be there to share techniques in a spontaneous, process-oriented way—not to instruct, but to inspire.
You’ll have space to follow your own path, while also receiving individual support when you need it. Through group exchanges and one-on-one conversations, we’ll reflect together and help each other grow.
This is an invitation to slow down, connect with the Irish landscape, and discover how the unexpected—both in art and in nature—can enrich your work while developing your voice.

Meet Bettina Egli Sennhauser
My passion lies in developing an abstract visual vocabulary through the exploration of natural materials and an intuitive, process-oriented approach.
In my work, the ancient technique of encaustic painting meets fresco elements, along with aspects of mixed media painting. Since 2019, I have been teaching in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Ireland, and the USA.
