Leslie Giuliani

In her latest work, Leslie Giuliani, paints and prints intricately textured backgrounds on Encaustiflex microfiber paper using R&F Encaustic paint and Pigment Sticks. These paintings she embroiders with her original drawings which she has transformed, using digitizing software, into complex stitchable programs. These embroidered pieces are then further embellished with appliqued pieces of other Encaustic paintings stitched down with decorative stitching lines. Sometimes the bling of sequins is added. Giuliani’ theatrical set pieces create glimpses of otherworldly landscapes inhabited by imagined flora and fauna where houses can hang in the sky from a cloud, trees can walk and flowery meteors can rain down on a distant ocean.

“I loved fairy tales and impossible adventure stories growing up. I wanted to believe that just around the corner, through a mirror or down a passage another world could exist with its own creatures, plants, atmosphere and gravity. Making this work gives me the license to create my own. I never plan these worlds. I just let them evolve through making, keeping the surprise and wonder alive.”

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Giuliani received her BFA from The University of Delaware, with further studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Her work is represented in collections of the Housatonic Museum of Art, the State of CT and many private collections. She was the recipient of an Artist Fellowship Grant from the state of CT for Craft. Giuliani is a Core Support Instructor with R&F Handmade Paints. She lives and works in Weston, CT.

Encaustic Printmaking Without a Press

In this workshop, artists will learn a vast number of printmaking techniques using Encaustic. We will work on and off the heated palette. R&F Pigment Sticks will be our ink. Using these techniques, wax and oil paints can be worked simultaneously, without regard for order or drying time. We will work on Encaustiflex, an absorbent microfiber paper that holds a lot of paint layers. No press is required so you can take these techniques right back to your studio. Having a variety of printmaking techniques at hand allows you to never be at a loss for something to get you going in the studio. Just build and layer.

Paper Lithography on Wax

Using Encaustic, we can create beautiful, complex backgrounds quickly. The difficulty can arise painting a detailed image to create an area of focus. Paper lithography is the answer. Using water, gum Arabic, a crayon drawing or a high-contrast toner-based image and the whole range of R&F Pigment sticks as our ink, we can print an intricateimage or images into our paintings. The best part is if the print is unsuccessful the first time, it can be wiped awaywithout damaging the beautiful background, ready for another go. After printing, the surface can be worked into further using a variety of drawing, painting and carving tools. This is a simple technique that can be done in your studio with minimal tools. Best of all, printing is done without the need for a press.
