Alaina Enslen

Alaina Enslen

I was born on an air force base that no longer exists in Oscoda, Michigan. My earliest nomadic childhood memories are eating red hibiscus flowers in Okinawa, Japan. From there I have traveled and lived in many states across the US as well as in Europe and the Middle East, my experiences with diverse cultures, identities, and beliefs throughout my life have deeply influenced my work. My paintings, encaustics, and collages draw from materials collected from my subjects, memorabilia, fabric, and objects from the environment. Over the last twenty years, my art has been shown internationally and nationally, including an exhibition in 2017 at the Caleidoscópio (University of Lisbon). My current work explores encaustic and fabric in bold designs to convey the emotive properties of cloth as experience and memory. I am currently represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery (Hudson, NY) and Design Supply Gallery (Birmingham, AL).

Finding Your Flow With Encaustic Monotypes

Discover the simplicity, wildness and expressive nature of encaustic monotypes. Monotypes are a simple way to connect with nature, practice mindfulness, cultivate a deeper sense of presence in your process and appreciation for the beauty and value of imperfection. Using both opaque and transparent colors and delicate Asian papers, you will lose yourself in creating luminous colors that dance across your heated surface and pull beautiful one-of-a-kind prints. We will dive into basic materials needed for monotypes, preparing your workspace, creating fluid forms in your monotypes, and play with experimental techniques.

Six Simple Book Binding Methods for Monotypes

In this course, you will learn how to make six different and easy types of notebooks for your monotypes. I’ve found that these simple books are a great way to make notes of my prints, organize them for future reference, and give as gifts to friends.
