Art Retreats

“The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time.”
— Mary Oliver

Mixed media Painting

Workshops are designed a bit differently than a traditional painting workshop. We gather in an inspiring part of the world for a week, with the desire to take a breath and reset our creative spirits. Part of that gathering involves learning how to move through a week full of history, culinary, musical, and textile experiences with an emphasis on gathering creative spark and fodder to use as the impetus for a painting which is reflective of the experience. Do you need to be a professional painter, no. If you desire a creatively connected travel experience with an emphasis on story, creativity, narrative, and imagination, this is your trip.

“Ireland is rugged and real. It’s an island on the edge of the world and you can feel the energy in her mountains, beaches, horizons, rocks and textures. The Irish are a people free in spirit and wild at heart. The culture is both ancient and modern. It’s a place to be nourished spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and creatively. There is something about Ireland that hits me straight in my heart as I return home to embrace the freedom and authenticity of the people and its landscapes. Join me and let’s create something new together!”

Oil Painting

This workshop is designed to guide the students toward creating a painting from a photo reference, using both indirect and direct traditional painting techniques. It aims to instruct painters on how to use the photograph to create a painting that surpasses the look of the photograph, not simply imitates a photograph. The workshop will explain how to create a useful photo reference, covering topics such as ideal lighting, camera settings, lenses, Photoshop, and printing.

Unleashing the Painter in you …

The greatest joy that comes from the creation of non-representational paintings is freedom and the celebration of line and color. Bringing forth a brand new work of art that is a mystery and a thing of beauty. The greatest surprise when the creation is finished is how they mirror into the soul of the artist. It is this search, this sacred and thrilling search, that interests me and every artist I know.

Tell your Story..

In this class the student will be introduced to my entire process from idea creation, to photoshoot, to image processing, to the final encaustic and oil paint finishing techniques. I will present methods and examples of how to make your photography tell a story. We will work with a model, costumes, props, and a location for practice illustrating your ideas. After our photography session, we will process our images either on the phone or the computer. We will spend time preparing our photos and substrates for use with encaustic. Finally, we will explore applying wax and oil paint to our images.

June 20th to 27th 2020

Under the influence..

What would happen if you allowed the land, the sky and the sea to fully awaken your senses? Breathe in, breathe out. We will work in both the art journal and on panels. Using a variety of acrylic mixed media supplies, we will start by making and altering collage materials. As we move to our surfaces, we will layer paper, color, and texture. We will make marks. We will exploit opposing elements such as transparency vs. opacity, glossy vs. matte, smooth vs. rough. Your voice will emerge.

Join me as we fall under the influence of Mulranny.
